LCN Building Control
You may ask yourself: What is LCN? What can
I do with LCN?
Well, this is a short introduction to LCN. A brief description of the LCN system can be found here.
LCN stands for Local Control Network and is designed to fulfill all demands on modern building control and automation requirements. It represents an automation system which can be easily implemented in any kind of building, like private homes, schools, hotels, hospitals, office buildings of any size.... The list is endless.
LCN is a programmable bus-operated system which consists
of hardware and software. After the installation of the
hardware the software is used to transfer predefined parameters
into the system.
What is LCN able to do ?

Dimming of lighting
Storage, adjusting and appliance of up to 120 different lighting scenarios
Temperature and lighting control depending on parameters as time of day, presence of people in the room/building....
Control of shutters and blinds depending on weather conditions
Hardware
The LCN hardware consists of the following
groups:
Bus units (Control of data transfer)
Couplers (Interfaces for the connection of different network levels and for the connection of a PC to the network)
Sensors (Detecting devices for wind, rain, light, temperature, movement)
Peripheral equipment (Barcode scanners, relays, A/D converters, binary input devices...)
Accessoires (Connectors, housings, fibre optic cables)
The modules are designed for switch board mounting and for the installation in wall boxes.
The moduels and couplers are micro-processor based for the control of data transfer. The standard transfer rate on the lower level is 9,600 Bd at a transmission volume of 100 telegrams per second.
The data transfer rate on the second level (important for large buildings, where multiple network levels are linked) is 2.5 Mbits per second at a volume of 10,000 telegrams per second.
All modules have the following common features:
Two separate outputs (dimming outputs or switching outputs up to 2000VA each)
Built-in power supply (no separate power supply network necessary!!!)
Remote control capability

LCN stands for Local Control Network.
LCN offers 3 principal advantages:
Easy planning
Easy installation
Easy operation
In general, only those systems which can easily be adapted to the customer or designer requirements will achieve a big share on the market - and LCN is such a system.
In practice, a low cost version of LCN can be installed providing only basic functions.
Given that the necessary installation has been made before, this low cost version can easily be turned into a luxury version step by step just by adding more units.
LCN has been designed to work with standard installation material. In other words, no special components such as special bus-operable switches, movement detectors etc. are required. However, third patry components can easily be integrated into the LCN bus system, if desired.
